A reflection on how quickly we dropped the suspicion we once had for any service asking for our financial data, what we still do not know about how it is handled, and why a friendly conversational interface is not the same as a friend.

On Friday, OpenAI launched a set of personal finance tools in preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States. Through a partnership with the connection service Plaid, users can link accounts from more than 12,000 financial institutions, including Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One, and then ask the assistant to analyze their spending, list their subscriptions, or build a five year plan to buy a house. OpenAI says more than 200 million users already ask financial questions every month. The reaction, broadly, was enthusiasm.

I want to sit with that enthusiasm for a moment, because the speed of it is the interesting part. This is not an argument that the product is bad, or that the engineering is careless. It is a reflection on how quickly a request that used to trigger suspicion now passes without friction, simply because it arrives inside a conversation.

The suspicion we used to have, and quietly dropped

Rewind a few years. Imagine landing on an unfamiliar website with a single promise: give me access to your bank accounts and I will manage your finances for you. Most of us would have hesitated. We would have looked for the company behind it, checked who they were, asked what they intended to do with the data, and probably closed the tab. That hesitation was not paranoia. It was a reasonable default for anything standing between you and your money.

The same request, phrased by a chat assistant that already helps you write emails and debug code, lands very differently. The interface is familiar, the tone is helpful, and the action feels like a continuation of a conversation rather than the handover of a credential. The friction did not disappear because the risk disappeared. It disappeared because the framing changed.

Two questions that are easy to skip

There are really two separate concerns here, and the conversational surface tends to blur both of them together.

What happens to the data, and how it travels

The first question is what an organization does with financial information once it has it: how long it is kept, who can see it, whether it informs anything beyond your own answers, and what the controls actually guarantee. OpenAI states that disconnecting a service removes synced data within thirty days and that financial memories can be viewed and deleted. Those are real controls, and they are worth using. They are also a policy, and a policy is a description of intent, not a technical impossibility.

The second question is quieter. Sensitive financial detail is being routed through a general purpose web and mobile interface that is built to remember context, because remembering context is what makes the assistant useful. The same property that lets it answer "has my spending changed recently" is the property that means the information has to live somewhere it can be recalled. Useful and exposed are, here, two sides of the same design.

There is a company behind the friend

The most effective thing the conversational model did was not technical. It was rhetorical. By answering in the first person, patiently, without judgment, it invites you to treat it as something close to a personal assistant who happens to work for you. It does not. Behind the helpful tone is a company with investors, a cost structure, and a need to turn a research lead into a durable business. That is not an accusation. It is simply the thing the interface is very good at making you forget.

Plaid sits in the same blind spot. Most users connecting an account will not think about the fact that a third party now brokers the link between the bank and the assistant, with its own data practices layered underneath the one they actually read.

The pattern, not the prediction

Think back to the early years of Facebook. It arrived as the friendly thing that connected everyone, and the enthusiasm was genuine. The indignation came later, once the Cambridge Analytica story surfaced and it became clear how the underlying business actually worked, ending in a five billion dollar penalty from the United States Federal Trade Commission in 2019. I am not predicting that history repeats here. I am pointing at the shape of it. Enthusiasm tends to arrive first and fully formed. Understanding of the incentives arrives slowly, often after the data has already moved.

This is not a reason to refuse, it is a reason to slow down

I am not arguing that you should never ask an assistant about money. These tools can genuinely help someone understand a budget or frame a long term goal, and that has value. The argument is narrower. Treat the decision to connect a bank account with the same deliberateness you would have applied to that unfamiliar website, not the casual reflex of continuing a chat.

A practical posture

Read what the controls actually promise and what they do not. Prefer asking general questions over linking live accounts when a general answer is enough. Connect the narrowest set of accounts that serves the goal, and disconnect when the goal is met. Assume that anything transmitted can persist somewhere, and decide with that assumption in mind. None of this requires distrust of the technology. It requires remembering that there is an organization, with its own incentives, on the other side of the conversation.

It takes time to understand how things really work. That delay between adoption and understanding is exactly the window in which sensitive data tends to move. The advice is simple and not cynical: ask, but ask with care, and without the comforting illusion that it is only a robot, and that the robot works for you.
